"[For being as he is] a man of two minds (hesitating, dubious, irresolute), [he is] unstable and unreliable and uncertain about everything [he thinks, feels, decides]." James 1:8
We are still looking at the person asking God for something (anything), whom God will NOT answer... not the way he or she wanted, anyway. James reveals a little more information about them. From verse six, we bring: "one who wavers, hesitates, doubts, (is like the billowing surge out at sea that is blown here and there, tossed by the wind." And now here in verse 8, we add: someone of two minds, hesitating, dubious, irresolute, unstable, unreliable, and uncertain about everything he or she thinks, feels, decides.
Friends, this is not, "James, being critical"... nor even, "Christ, picking on us"... No, I said we must look at all scripture from the context of God's un-ending Love, and so we must examine these things James is saying about the person who isn't getting their prayer answered today. It has been our nature to pick through the dung heap of man's wisdom since the day we were born... picking one thing... trying that out... ok, that didn't work, so let's try this one... ok, this is working... I'll keep it. That's how we lived until we finally gave into what God was calling us to... "the TRUTH".
And so now, we have decided to follow God's truth... we have to change. Looking at some of the problems with the person James is referring to. "one who wavers, hesitates, doubts, (is like the billowing surge out at sea that is blown here and there, tossed by the wind." We can't be that way with God... why? Because it makes Him angry? No... it makes Him sad, because with God, it won't work that way. For one thing... we don't "have" to be like we use to... it's a matter of trusting in and relying up Him... that's what "believe" means. You've run out of options... you can't go back to the old way for very long with the Holy Spirit inside, now... so the only thing we can do now is TRUST His WORD.
One more point, and I'll quit... "a man of two minds, hesitating, dubious, irresolute, unstable, unreliable, and uncertain about everything he or she thinks, feels, decides", cannot STAND on a TRUTH and reach the next TRUTH, before some FALSE teaching comes along and KNOCKS them off.
On the other hand, "a person who loves and trusts God... that God"s Word is literally God (John 1:1-5) and that every single letter of the Holy Scriptures is important (Matthew 5:18), and that until heaven and earth pass, not one jot or one tittle shall pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. That person who believes these things, will build each Word of God one foundation upon another. God can bless someone like that. They have heard from God, searched the scriptures to make sure what they heard lines up with scripture, and step out in confident faith. The can pray with that kind of faith.
Let's pick up with James verses 1:9-10 next time.
I love you.
