Ephesians 3:15-16

"For Whom every family in heaven and on earth is named [that Father from Whom all fatherhood takes its title and derives its name]." Ephesians 3:15

The word Patria, which "family" is translated from, was used to describe a large body of people linked through ancestry and sociopolitical interests (a nation). In other words it refers to all of the descendants of a particular patriarch. The bible says that ultimately there are two families... God's and satan's, but continuing in context here to the Jews and Gentiles now being in one family, Paul is talking about the family of God. Further, you and I now are part of this same family whom Paul is about to start praying for in the following passages. Those whom are in Christ, who have been fathers and all who have had fathers, now belong to "The" Father!

16. "May He grant you out of the rich treasury of His glory to be strengthened and reinforced with mighty power in the inner man by the [Holy] Spirit [Himself indwelling your innermost being and personality]."

Search the depths of the deepest ocean... the densest forest... the vast universe, and you will never stop finding the rich treasury of God's glory. Minerals that heal, food and plants that sustain... Air, water, clothing, lumber, the list goes on forever and it's All Gods' glory.

But Wait! What was the rest of the verse? It's to be strengthened and reinforced with mighty power in the inner man? That's right... the inner man... that part of every man and woman that will never die, never stop being aware of the eternal realm that time nor space have ever bound. You see how quickly we jumped to all the physical riches God provides, yet we know God created those things for us to enjoy and NEVER meant for us to be sustained by. No, the rich treasury of His glory Paul is referring to are spiritual riches! The spiritual wisdom that not only will decide where you will spend eternity, but spiritual things that impact our remaining time here. The wisdom to carry you when you have lost your sight, your arms and legs, a lung, your parents, your husband, all your friends!

In context to what Paul has been talking about, suffering is probably why he begins his prayer for us to be strengthened by God's Spirit. We rarely show much spiritual wisdom during the easy times in life. It is in suffering that the grace of God is manifested.

Like Christ in Gethsemane, we shrink away from suffering and ask that, if it is possible, this cup might pass from us. If we are to have God's wisdom in such times, it must be by God's strength. He must give us spiritual wisdom, through His word, through His Spirit (The Holy Spirit, and when necessary, His ministering angels. And not only in times of suffering do we need strengthened, but every day of our lives. What about temptation? We need God's wisdom and strength. What about making moral choices? We need His wisdom and strength to do what is right. We need strength to speak the truth to the world around us. Yes, our spiritual needs far outweigh the physical! Amen?

Let's pick up with Ephesians verse 3:17 next time.

I love you.
